Beyond Karma and Illusion
Zen is a Japanese word derived from the Chinese root Chan, which best translates as “seeing original nature.” According to Buddhism, all sentient beings are the Buddha but do not know it. As a result, we wander in the six realms of rebirth or Samsara, a cyclical dream-scape fueled by our past karma. In the study and practice of Zen, we are given teachings designed to cut through the delusions of karma and wake us up from the dream of being the false identity center, or ego. The beauty of this Path is its potent simplicity.
In this series of classes we focus on the core teachings of Mahayana Buddhism. We practice zazen, a meditation practice that frees the mind from all concepts and judgments. By “just sitting” (shikantaza), the clouds of false thinking begin to depart, and the full moon of Zen will naturally shine in all of its primordial clarity and thundering silence.

We will read and discuss the classic book on Zen, by Shunryu Suzuki. Zen Mind, Beginners Mind is a powerful guide in helping us “undo what never was.”
