Consider the following questions while you are reading through the chapter 9 for next week’s class:

  1. What is at “the heart of the Atonement principle”? (p.200)
  2. Based on what we learned from chapter 8, what is another way of stating “the Atonement principle”?
  3. How does the ego try and compromise the Course by inserting its beliefs about the body? (p.200)
  4. How is the “ego’s arrogance” talked about on page 203?
  5. What is meant by Jesus when he says that we loudly call to death to save us from communication? (p.209)
  6. “Finally, ‘the grim commandments’ and ‘twisted rituals of condemnation’ can be understood in two different ways.” What are they? (p.215)

    This passage with its vivid alliterations, highlighted by Ken in a little homage to Helen, makes palpable the sheer evil of the ego thought system:

    (T-19.IV-C.4:5-8) The arrogance of sin, the pride of guilt, the sepulchre of separation, all are part of your unrecognized dedication to death. The glitter of guilt you laid upon the body would kill it. For what the ego loves,
    it kills for its obedience. But what obeys it not, it cannot kill.

    These images hit me viscerally. I can sit with the emotional reactions, without judgment, and offer them on my alter, as old beliefs that no longer serve, asking HS to replace them with what She would have me know. Even the seeming permanence of the sepulchre of separation is no match for Truth and dissolves in the light of our forgiveness for having believed we could ever separate from God—for ever having been dedicated to death.
    I love this!
