    1. Thoughts occur at a symptom level and at a causal level.

      The self-image thinks “symptomatically,” and exists solely to reify and reinforce time, limitation, and separation. It can change beliefs all day long and accomplish no change.

      Real change occurs when there is a shift in belief at the causal level, from self-image to Witness. “From time-bound consciousness to the timeless state of eternity.”

  10. Hey Mary, I think you are spot on with your take. To add to what you are saying, I would draw a parallel between what the Course calls perception and what Maharaj calls consciousness. Both are described as the first split from primordial awareness, thus giving rise to “I Am the Witness,” the decision-maker. What then flows from the Eye of the I AM is the realm of universal content, appearing as name and form.

    Wrong perception would be the consciousness of the jiva, the I Am identified as body and misperceiving itself within a realm of particulars, born in time and destined to die, in a state of self-forgetting, lost in the appearances of name and form. The Course and Maharaj refer to this as dream, hallucination, illness, pain, etc. As Maharaj puts it:

    “To take appearance for reality is a grievous sin and the cause of all calamities” (ch.14, p.42)

    Maharaj and the Course contrast this imagined world of self-love and selfish desires with the state of consciousness that has remembered itself (through a rigorous sorting out process). Leaving the I Am as the only fact and cause of the universe, reflecting the very light of primordial awareness. Seeing itself as the one consciousness manifesting as the universe, with all things bathed in the purifying light of its self-recognition. Self-remembering gives rise to what Maharaj calls the “objective world,” and the Course calls “the real world.” The parallels are striking.

    One way in which Jesus describes the real world is found in ACIM, p.439:

    “Sit quietly and look upon the world you see, and tell yourself: The real world is not like this. It has no buildings, and there are no streets where people walk alone and separately. There are no stores where people buy an endless list of things they do not need. It is not lit with artificial light, and night comes not upon it. There is no day that brightens and grows dim. There is no loss. Nothing is there but shines, and shines forever.”

    Maharaj:

    “In my world it is always fine weather. There is no night or day, no heat or cold. No worries beset me there, nor regrets. My mind is free of thoughts, for there are no desires to slave for” (ch.23, p.79)

    Both Maharaj and the Course teach that even right perception, or self-realized consciousness of I AM/Witness, must be gone beyond, for it is inherently dualistic. Maharaj speaking to “dreamers” from the “real world” is salvific in purpose, and simply a means to an end, the end being when all the separated jivas realize they are the Sonship or the one Dreamer of the world of dreams. The I AM, or what the Course calls the Son, will come to an end of dreaming, false and true alike. Here the Son is at last reconciled to the Father, or primordial awareness, in what Maharaj calls pure Being and the Course calls Heaven.

    “The only thing that can help is to wake up from the dream…. The awakener signifies the beginning of the end. There are no eternal dreams” (ch.27, p.107).

  11. Mary, at first reading your comments the initial reaction was yes and Yes. It seems that we are learning to live with simultaneity. Seeing the Is and is not from the Ground of Awareness.

      I think maybe it must be yes and yes. Learning to live with paradox. Which is only paradox because my (our) mind is limited and because we think we live in time.

    I am so glad we ended class where we did. I had a question about this passage when I was reading it this week.
    Starting in Chapter 23, 2nd paragraph:
    M: Your world is transient, changeful. My world is perfect, changeless. You can tell me what you like about your world — I shall listen carefully, even with interest, yet not for a moment shall I forget that your world is not, that you are dreaming…
    going through to
    …M: In your world I appear so. In mine I have being only. Nothing else.
    It would help me to understand this passage in ACIM vocabulary. It seems like M is contrasting (what the Course would call) God’s world with the dream, or the mind identifying as a separated ego-body. He is describing the world beyond (what the Course would call) the Real world – the world that sees past the dream and its separated dream figures and remembers the Truth of the One Mind of the Son of God. Instead, he seems to be describing his world in purely non-dual terms, which can only be God’s world.
    I am not at all sure, because he is still speaking of two worlds, yours and mine, and you and me.
